Water Resources Monitoring and Assessment

The purpose of the Water Resources Monitoring and Assessment Department is:
To monitor and assess the quantity of all water resources (i.e. surface and groundwater) at national and transboundary levels.  

The Department comprises two Divisions:

1.  Monitoring and Assessment Division, is responsible for monitoring of surface and groundwater quantities, assessing the quantities and availabilities of these supplies for all uses in Uganda, maintaining a useful water resources Management Information System (MIS) comprising data, information and analytical tools (e.g. numerical models and Geographic Information Systems - GIS).  The Division comprises three Sections:

a.  Hydrology

b.  Hydrogeology

c.  Data and Information Management, devoted to water resources data and information management, including GIS, various analytical numerical modelling tools and a water resources MIS.

2.  Transboundary Water Resources Management Division which promotes transboundary regional cooperation for equitable and reasonable utilisation of the shared water resources of the Nile and Lake Victoria basins through active participation in the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) and the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) programmes and activities, as well as other international water resources management programmes (e.g. Global Water Partnership - GWP).  The main activities include:

a.  Transboundary water resources management policy formulation, reviews, implementation and advice,

b.  Regional coordination of transboundary projects and programmes,

c.  Transboundary water resources management MIS and monitoring, and evaluation of transboundary projects and programmes, and

d.  Raising awareness, capacity and confidence-building as well as capacity-building on transboundary water resources management issues.
