Directorate of Environment Affairs

The National Environment Act (1995) Cap 153 defines environment as "the components of the earth, the physical factors of the surrounding of the human beings including land, water, climate, odour, taste, the biological factors of animals and plants and the social factor that include natural and built environment". Environmental management is a cornerstone to socio-economic development for Uganda, now and in the foreseeable future. Ensuring environmental sustainability is central to attainment of other Millennium Development Goals and is the foundation for "Prosperity for All" in Uganda.

The Environment provides enabling services for the country's development.
The ENR sub-sector is concerned with environmental policy, regulation, coordination, inspection, supervision and monitoring, action planning and implementation, enforcement and compliance, education and awareness raising, the restoration of degraded ecosystems, as well as mitigating and adapting to climate change.
