7th NBDF

Introduction

In Uganda, the Ministry of Water and Environment is assigned as the designated focal point Ministry for the Nile Basin Initiative. In inline with this important role, the Ministry will take lead in establishing the National Organization for the 7th NBDF in Uganda. Collaboration with other relevant Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs) and partners will be crucial in fulfilling the responsibilities of the host country. The success of the Nile Basin Development Forum heavily relies on the commitment and active involvement of the host country and its key partners.

What is Nile Basin Development Forum (NBDF)?

The Nile Basin Development Forum (NBDF) is a high-level regional event convened every three years by the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) in collaboration with its Member States and in partnership with development partners. The event is a science-policy dialogue that provides an opportunity for sharing latest information, knowledge and best practices as well as building partnerships among professionals, in trans-boundary water resources management and development. The objectives of the Forum are to build common understanding on the status of the water and natural resources base of the Nile Basin among stakeholders, examine the shared complex challenges and, exchange perspectives on the solutions for addressing these challenges. Six editions of the NBDF have taken place, with the last held on February 22nd to 7th May 2021 in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.

NBDF forums are attended by a broad range of stakeholders who include ministers in charge of water and foreign affairs in Nile riparian countries, other senior government officials, parliamentarians, water resource managers, river basins organizations, economists, environmentalists, development planners, academics, researchers, media practitioners, civil society, local and international NGOs, UN agencies, and private individuals and corporations.

Why NBDF?

The aim of the biennial, high level event, which was first held in 2006, is to create communities of people who are well informed, actively engaged in and promoting Nile cooperation as the only means of achieving sustainable management and development of the shared Nile Basin water resources as well as addressing shared risks, threats and challenges across the Basin.

The Nile Basin Development Forum (NBDF) 2023

The Nile Basin Development Forum (NBDF) is a high- level regional event convened every three years by the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) in collaboration with its Member States and in partnership with development partners. The event is a science-policy-practice dialogue that provides an opportunity for constructive reflection on contemporary information, knowledge and best practices as well as building partnerships among professionals, in transboundary water resources management and development.
The 7th in its series, NBDF 2023 will focus on the theme: Deepening Nile Cooperation: Accelerating the Achievement of SDGs in a Changing Climate

The Forum is taking place at a time when the region is experiencing increasing impacts of climate change on water resources, which impacts have a potential to exacerbate the challenges of the basin management in a complex natural environment. Implied in the theme, therefore, is the urgent need to implement structural and non-structural measures to build the resilience of the Nile Basin to impacts of climate change.

The Forum starts with webinars that are virtual running from 18th September 2023 to 12th October 2023 and the hybrid conference will start  on 16th October - 18th October 2023 at Speke Resort Munyonyo Kampala.

How to participate

The main ways of participation in the NBDF are by; i. Co-convening a session ii. Submitting an abstract and making a presentation on the forum; and iii. Registering to be part of the audience and contribute to the discussions
