KYANKWANZI, UGANDA — In a major boost to safe water coverage and agricultural resilience in central Uganda, the Ministry of Water and Environment yesterday officially commissioned and handed over the Bulaza Solar-Powered Water Supply and Irrigation System to the community in Kyankwanzi District.
The multi-million project was funded by United Kingdom Export Finance (UKEF) and executed by contractor M/S Nexus Green Ltd under the engineering supervision of M/S SARI Consulting Ltd in a joint venture with SGAPI.
The commissioning and inspection exercise was led by the State Minister for Water, Hon. Mrs. Aisha Sekindi, alongside the Chairman of the Trinity-Bulaza Community Water and Sanitation Scheme (WSS), Rev. Father Ronald Leonard Katsigazi.
Technical Excellence and Clean Energy Integration
The modern water scheme was declared fully functional, efficient, and compliant with national standard specifications. Designed to leverage clean energy for long-term operational sustainability, the system replaces traditional, expensive diesel pumping with high-capacity solar infrastructure.
The expansion of user connection points—increasing yard taps from 10 to 28 during execution—aims to reduce walk times for local households and ensure immediate access across multiple service points.
Strategic Relief for Local Farmers
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Rev. Father Ronald Leonard Katsigazi expressed deep appreciation to the project team for their responsiveness and timely execution.
He underscored the critical necessity of the facility, emphasizing that prolonged dry spells in Kyankwanzi routinely cause severe losses for local livestock farmers due to water scarcity.
