Forest Management and Sustainable Charcoal Value Chain

The Forestry Management and Sustainable Charcoal Value Chain (FM&SCVC) project is an intervention of the Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Water and Environment and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The four-year project (2021- 2025), seeks to mitigate negative environmental, social and economic impacts resulting from charcoal production by promoting sustainable charcoal production practices, such as establishment of woodlots and use of more efficient charcoal production kilns, while at the same time promoting cleaner energy alternatives.

The project is implemented in 14 districts in Uganda, namely: Mubende, Kassanda, Kiboga, Nakaseke, Luwero, Nwoya, Amuru, Gulu, Lamwo, Kitgum, Adjumani, Obongi, Moyo and Yumbe.
